Indicators of Proficiency

These documents outline what a “Proficient” student looks like across all numeracy content areas, aligned with the BC Curriculum learning standards. It provides clear, consistent descriptions of the skills, understandings, and behaviours a student demonstrates when they are meeting grade‑level expectations in numeracy.

Rather than focusing on tasks or scores, the document emphasizes observable evidence of learning—how a proficient student reasons, represents, explains, and applies mathematical understanding within each content area (e.g., number sense, patterns, measurement, geometry, data). It supports standards‑based assessment by clarifying the meaning of “Proficient” across content items, helping ensure shared understanding and consistent assessment practices.

These documents are based on a variety of sources, including the BC Curriculum & Foundational Learning Progressions.
