Instructional Routines

Raising Hands

What are Instructional Routines?

An instructional routine is a repeatable design that, if designed well, allows for all students to engage in learning opportunities while also building crucial mathematical habits of mind (Kelemanik, Lucenta, & Creighton, 2016).

Our collection of Number Sense instructional routines are open-ended tasks that develop number sense and allow students to access the curricular competencies.  The teacher is focused on gathering insight into the students' thinking rather than driving the discussion. Through well practiced routines, students feel safe and comfortable engaging with increasingly complex tasks.
