Keynote: Building Competent Mathematicians K-4

Carole will speak to a research-based model for teaching, learning and assessing to support students in becoming mathematically competent.

Examples from across the grades will be featured to allow teachers to experience first-hand what it means to develop skills, concepts, strategies and resilience in today’s diverse classroom.

Session 1: Good Questions for Primary:

Mathematical Tasks to Include All Learners

Our primary math classrooms are diverse spaces, full of possibility.  How can we engage our students in thinking deeply about important mathematical concepts while including all voices in the conversation?  What questions, tasks and opportunities allow our youngest learners to develop as numerate citizens?  Teachers will explore rich tasks and open questions to inspire mathematical competence in our primary students.  Come prepared to play!

Session 2: Good Questions for Intermediate and Middle: Addressing Diversity in the Middle School Math Classroom

The key math concepts in intermediate and middle school mathematics include multiplicative thinking, proportional reasoning and algebraic thinking.  How can we engage our students in engaging deeply with these critical concepts while including all learners? What questions, tasks and learning opportunities allow our intermediate and middle school students to develop as numerate citizens?  Come explore rich tasks and open questions to address diversity and build mathematical competence.

Teacher resources will be available for purchase at the session.
